The benefits of vitamin C
Vitamin C or ascorbic acid is necessary for the development of the body – the bones, teeth, gums, skin, and capillaries. It is an important nutrient that helps heal wounds and is important for relieving stress and fatigue.
Vitamin C ensures the regular functioning of the brain and balances cholesterol levels.
Vitamin C in food and the sources
Sources of vitamin C include fruits and vegetables and berries. It is abundant in rosehips, red and black currants, sea buckthorn, lemons, oranges, and mandarins. Peppers, parsley, turnips, and white cabbage also contain vitamin C, as well as gooseberries.
Uses of vitamin C
Ascorbic acid is used to increase the absorption of iron and, among other things, to prevent spring fatigue. It is used to shorten the period of illness and relieve symptoms. The recommended daily dose of vitamin C is up to 100 mg. In case of disease, the intake can be increased to 1000 mg.
Deficiency of vitamin C
In case of severe vitamin C deficiency, scurvy may occur. Symptoms of scurvy are bleeding gums and tooth loss. Internal bleeding, joint pain and bruising may also occur. That being said, the disease is not common in developed countries.
Side effects and overdose of vitamin C
An overdose of vitamin C is generally not dangerous because the body easily releases excess vitamins. The overdose of ascorbic acid may lead to diarrhea. If the overconsumption of the nutrient lasts for a long period of time, kidney stones can appear as a side effect.
