What is Lutein?
Lutein is a natural pigment that belongs to xanthophylls – oxygen-containing carotenoids. Xanthophylls are the main component of yellow-red colour in plant parts (buds, leaves, flowers, fruits), many micro-organisms, and seaweeds. They are less common in the animal kingdom (in egg yolk).
Lutein acts as a kind of an antioxidant filter that protects the eyes and is necessary for everyone who regularly strains their eyesight and risks losing its acuity. Lutein for supplements is made of plant-based raw materials. Generally, it has an added complex of vitamins beneficial for the eyes.
Benefits of Lutein
Lutein is known for its beneficial properties. It is important for human health but is not synthesised by the body. It possesses antioxidant and light-absorbing properties.
Lutein contributes to:
- neutralising the damaging effect on the retina;
- maintaining visual acuity and normal condition of visual function, preventing the clouding of the lens;
- neutralising free radicals formed in the photoreceptor cells of the retina under the influence of light;
- activation of insulin and stabilising of sugar level.
Lutein deficiency in the body is dangerous since it causes damaging changes in the eye tissues, which leads to retinal dystrophy and irreversible processes of the loss of vision. This problem has become more relevant due to the thinning of the ozone layer and increased time people spend behind screens.
Lutein in supplements should be taken by:
- elderly people to prevent the loss of vision;
- people with vision problems in complex with the main course of treatment and in-between them;
- people working behind the computer, with welding equipment, photo flashes and stage lights;
- people with the eye fatigue;
- people working as drivers of locomotives, subway trains, car drivers, as well as in places with changing or incoming lights.
Uses of Lutein
The daily dose of lutein is 5–10 mg, and the body does not get a sufficient amount with food. Therefore, lutein should enter the body not only with food but with dietary supplements. It is necessary to consult a doctor to get recommendations for use or follow the instruction for the supplement.
Lutein side effects and overdose
Lutein does not cause side effects, except for the cases of individual intolerance. Overdose causes the yellowing of the skin and allergic reactions.
